Philip Pawley studied Mathematical Physics at the University of Sussex, 1971–1974.

Disappointed that Physics did not supply “The Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything” (as Douglas Adams was later to put it) he read a large portion of the works of CG Jung. This was while still supposedly studying Mathematical Physics.

Failed to shut his teacher up

While still searching, he took up the piano. It was his piano teacher who was responsible for introducing him to the Alexander Technique. After being repeatedly told to go for Alexander lessons, he finally went — but only so he could shut his piano teacher up by saying “I tried it and it was rubbish”. At the end of his first, entrancing, Alexander lesson he was surprised when his Alexander teacher asked him “Do you want to continue?” There was only one possible answer to that: “Yes, of course I want to continue”.

Forty lessons later, in January 1978, he began his 3-year training to become an Alexander Technique teacher. Graduating in December 1980, he first came to Liverpool because members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra needed an Alexander teacher. Broadening out his practice, he has taught in Liverpool ever since.

Kept on his toes

Philip is married to a stunning redhead from Blackburn. Anna, by the way, was also a very reluctant Alexander pupil. Anna is a very intuitive Homeopath. Their two lovely daughters, Emma and Sarah, seem likely also to choose people-nurturing professions.

Not the Universe and Everything — just Life

While the Alexander technique does not provide the answer to the Universe and Everything it does provide a stunning solution to many of the thornier questions of life. What more productive way to earn a living than teach it? Answers on a postcard to Philip Pawley, 37 Hope Street, Liverpool L1 9EA — or you can call him on 0151 708 6172.

This page is the introduction to “The Hows and Whys of Semi-Supine” which you can download for free here.

People usually completely miss the point when they tell you to do Semi-Supine. Semi-Supine is indeed truly wonderful but what is it wonderful for?

And because they miss the point they tell you to do all the wrong things. Which immediately makes it far less wonderful than it should be.

What is Semi-Supine wonderful for?

Semi-Supine is just so-so at helping you to learn how to stand better or sit better or walk better — because, when you’re doing Semi-Supine you’re not doing any of those things: you’re lying down. Semi-Supine, surprise, surprise, is for helping you to rest better.

Why is resting better so important?

Resting better — and more often — is vital when you’re learning to do anything at all better, even just sitting at a computer. It’s vital because, when you learn to move better you’re beginning to use muscles that you otherwise never use. Never-used muscles are going to be small, weak and flimsy. Such muscles can’t work in anything more than very short bursts.

Ask an unused muscle to work for longer and it packs up on you. When it packs up on you, you’re back to using the same old muscles you always use.

That means you’re not learning anything: you’re just doing things the same way you’ve always done them.

And those weak muscle are getting only one or two tiny doses of exercise all day so they’re not really get stronger either. What a waste.

Don’t waste your time lying down for twenty minutes

The wise way to use Semi-Supine is to lie down little and often. Really little and really often. Like for just thirty seconds at a time — and every ten minutes. Do that and you’ll zoom ahead making progress in weeks that, for other people, takes decades — or never happens at all.

Now you can get started right away

I’m so glad you downloaded this booklet because now you can be one of those who zoom ahead. You can start right now: just take a thirty second break and lie down.

Now? Yes, now! You can learn the details of how to lie down later. For, now just do it any old way you like.

Are you back from your micro lie-down? Congratulations. Brilliant. Now just remember to keep doing it often. Sometimes you can, indeed do it every ten minutes. At other times you might only get round to it after an hour — or even two. No matter, you’re still streets ahead of those people who think they’re doing so well lying down twice a day.

So congratulations on downloading this booklet and congratulations on having done your first micro lie-down. What is those twice-a-day down-liers lie down for twenty minutes. What do they gain from that?. All they gain is momentary recovery from the dreadful mess they got into by NOT lying down for a disastrous six hours.

P.S.

If you sometimes get sudden bad back pain that takes a long time to go away, get this article that will show you exactly what to do in order to sort yourself out quickly and permanently:
SmilingBackMethod.com/quick-recovery. Yes, micro lie-downs are included. The rest is of the article contains insights that I would never have acquired without doing micro lie-downs myself. That’s why you won’t get that vital information anywhere else.
